Fathers charged after avoiding child support

For noncustodial parents in Maryland, it may not always be possible to afford child support payments. In some cases, however, parents have gotten away with barely paying any child support by claiming low incomes only to give themselves away as making more money than they disclosed by bragging on social media. For instance, one case involved a father who had spent a total of $189 in child support on his 3-year-old son since the child's birth. The support payments averaged to just 14 cents a day, and the child's mother said that what the father had paid was just to keep himself out of jail.

The child in this case is a leukemia patient, and his mother has been responsible for covering most of his medical bills, which included many hospital stays, spinal taps and chemotherapy sessions. Though the father allegedly could not pay more child support, his Facebook page apparently contains pictures of him with large amounts of money and posts in which he bragged about the amount of money that he brought home from work.

That father is facing felony charges for evading child support payments. In other cases that are similar to this one, parents have used social media as a means to boast about money after claiming that they had insufficient funds to pay support. In cases like these, the non-paying parents' actions make casework easier for investigators.

When a noncustodial parent is not paying any child support or is making inadequate payments, the custodial parent is often overwhelmed just trying to care for the child. At such a time, it may be helpful for the custodial parent to consult with a lawyer who has family law experience. The lawyer might help the parent pursue legal action to increase the chances of receiving back and future child support.
